Periodontitis is common but fairly preventable. There are few reasons for this disease:
- poor oral hygiene
- smoking or chewing tobacco
- genetics
- crooked teeth that are hard to keep clean
- pregnancy
- diabetes
- medications, including steroids, certain types of anti-epilepsy drugs, cancer therapy drugs, some calcium channel blockers and oral contraceptives
- periodontitis can lead to tooth loss, deterioration of the jaw bone and it’s a risk factor for heart and lung diseases.
Symptoms include swollen, red, and bleeding gums. Treatment includes professional cleanings (scaling and root planning). Advanced cases may require surgery.
